From the Principal
It is hard to believe we have concluded the first four weeks into Term One, and we are about to move into the Lenten season in a fortnight.
Our Year 7 students have settled into high school life with enthusiasm. They have now completed two full cycles of lessons, gaining confidence in their new learning routines. The House Spirit Afternoon last week was a wonderful opportunity for bonding with their Houses, and after all that enthusiastic cheering, this week they strengthened those friendships and developed new skills at their exciting Residential Experience at ‘The Tops’ at Stanwell Tops. It has been heartening to see them embracing new experiences and challenges with such positivity when I visited on Wednesday. This first Residential is focused on the theme from the parable of the Good Samaritan, “Who is My Neighbour?”. I am grateful to the many staff, particularly Deputy Dean of Wellbeing, Mrs Hickey, and Leader of Cocurricular, Mrs He, for the enormous effort in organising and running the program for over 250 12 year olds!

This week, we proudly launched our newest Overseas Learning Tour: the German Languages and Music Tour to Austria. This exciting opportunity broadens our long-standing language-focused tours, now incorporating a rich musical experience in the home of Beethoven, Strauss, Schubert and Mozart. On Wednesday night, we held a webinar for interested parents, and we were delighted by the enthusiasm and engagement shown. This tour promises to be a unique and enriching adventure for our students and we hope will be a permanent fixture on our learning tour calendar.
Next week, we gear up for our annual Swimming Carnival at SOPAC, and excitement is building as we saw in the pre-Carnival House Meetings this week! With the introduction of our two new Houses, competition will be fierce as they try to make their mark for the first time. We look forward to a fantastic day of College and House spirit.
As we approach the Lenten season, we also turn our focus to compassion and solidarity. Our annual Caritas Trek once again reminds us of the daily struggles faced by women around the world who walk long distances to collect water for their families. This important Mission initiative encourages our students to reflect on gratitude for simple gifts we have in Australia and raises a global awareness. Held over two separate mornings, staff and students will make a very early start to complete a 5km round trip walk and collect water from nearby creeks, returning to the College in time for school to begin.
An important reminder for families who have friends or colleagues interested in MSB for their daughters education—Open Day is just around the corner! This year, it will be held on Sunday 2 March. Our wonderful Parents and Friends Association will, as always, be staffing the food and drink stalls, this year in partnership with our new Canteen Operator, Vanilla Blue. If you can spare some time to assist with food and drink service, the P&F would greatly appreciate your help. Further details can be found below in this newsletter.

From the Dean of Mission
Next week marks one of my favourite events of the year – the Caritas Trek. This walk provides our students and staff with the opportunity to experience, even if just briefly, what many people around the world must do regularly to access two basic human rights: water and education. At 6:30am, we will leave the College to walk in solidarity with young women across the globe as they collect water and bring it back to their communities. It’s a powerful and humbling experience, uniting us all for a common cause.

Caritas is a Catholic international aid and development organisation with strong connections to the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference through the Bishops’ Commission for Social Justice, Mission, and Service. Caritas Australia partners with some of the most marginalised communities in Australia and overseas, confronting the challenges of poverty. Many of you are likely familiar with Project Compassion and the “Project Compassion Boxes,” which help raise much of the funding supporting Caritas’ work.
Throughout Lent this year, we will be actively assisting Caritas by raising funds and learning more about the organisation's efforts to alleviate poverty. If you’d like to support our students and staff doing this year’s Trek, please visit our donation page:

. Be sure to follow our social media for updates and photos from the two-day event.
Last year, a cohort of Year 11 students undertook the Accelerated Studies of Religion 1 Unit course, achieving outstanding results. This year, their focus shifts to a new and exciting chapter in their religious education with the introduction of our bespoke Social Justice in Action course. Building on their exploration in the Junior School and the Studies of Religion Course, they will study key Biblical texts on justice, Catholic Social Teaching, and broader Church teachings, gaining a deeper insight into how Christians today actively engage in social justice work. The course will provide students with the skills and strategies necessary for advocating for meaningful change, while also allowing them to explore a specific area of Social Justice in depth. Additionally, students will develop valuable skills in letter writing, speaking, and conducting meetings—skills that will serve them well as they move beyond the Red Brick Wall into the wider world.
We are delighted that Fr Jim from The Catholic Parish of Epping and Carlingford, along with representatives from Vinnies will be providing valuable insights this term. These sessions promise to be enriching and inspiring, providing real-world connections to their studies. I look forward to sharing more details of their work in future newsletters.

Wrap with Love
Wrap with Love
Wrap with Love returns for 2025 every Monday at lunchtime. Sessions are held in the Library and students are welcome to bring their lunch and water bottles to these sessions. Students work to knit, crochet and sew beautiful handmade blankets that can be donated to those in need. Wrap with Love is a non profit organisation, so relies on the generous blankets made by students throughout the year. By contributing to Wrap with Love, our students embody Hospitality and Stewardship, recognising that that their skills are a gift from God and sharing in those gifts is an act of graciousness, service and compassion. Resources are provided, however, students may like to bring their own 4mm knitting needles or crochet hooks and yarn. For more information, please feel free to contact Mrs Jacinta Wells at jwells@msb.nsw.edu.au.

Year 11 Engineering Studies Catapult Design
Year 11 Engineering Studies students were challenged to design and build a catapult in class. They were limited to certain resources and a time limit.
Students rose to the challenge and in typical engineering fashion, tested their design and then refined them to maximise performance.
Being able to think quickly and adapt to the situation is an important engineering skill that we are developing in class.

NAPLAN 2025
NAPLAN 2025
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2025 will take place from Wednesday 12 March to Monday 24 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school’s learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school, so the best preparation is their everyday classroom learning. Our school will also undertake activities to help students become familiar with the types of questions and tools available in the online tests.
The public demonstration site https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public- demonstration-site is available for you to see the format of the online tests.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website and the NAP website https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/for-parents-carers.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact Ms Natalie Hutchinson.

2025 Residential and Retreat experiences
2025 Residential and Retreat experiences
This week Year 7, along with 23 staff, have headed to Stanwell Tops for the first of our residential experiences for the year. At Bennies, we have continued with our commitment to the residential and retreat program, much against the movement of a number of other schools who, due to staffing and costing concerns, have chosen to walk away from these experiences. For us we see these programs as an essential element in our suite of offerings with academic and non-academic staff alike attending as a way of supporting the girls to thrive. The last three days have seen the girls grow and whether growing in friendships, connections or self-confidence, this growth then has significant short and long-term benefits. A recent article by NcNatty, Nairn, Campbell-Price and Boyes (2024) explored the lasting impact of outdoor education on adolescent girls. Their research, based on interviews of school alumni, identified four key benefits of outdoor education to their lives post school. The four factors, focusing on the healing benefits of time in nature, impact on overall wellbeing, development of independence and establishment of strong female friendships and identity, are the reason why we continue to invest in our programs. As the girls fervently wrote in their journals during our time away, excited for the day when in Year 12, they can look back at their six experiences during high school, I hope they reflect that they reap the same benefits that their predecessors, as well as the alumni in the McNatty article, have had from their residential experiences. Our next experience, in a few short weeks, is the Year 10 Urban Challenge, where the girls will spend three days, accompanied by our staff as well as the staff of Urban Challenge, completing a series of activities and service. These activities, also a reflection of our bespoke program focusing on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, form a part of the unique and long-lasting Bennies experience. Whilst there may be less Frozen themed dance moves from Year 10 in comparison to the Year 7s, the sense of joy and camaraderie remain a consistent, and we look forward to them extending their capacity and friendships during their time away.

Student Leadership Update
Student Leadership Update
As we begin the 2025 school year, student leadership programs have been underway, allowing opportunities for growth, and the development of students in their leadership roles. So far, we have had the launch of the 2025 Student Representative Council for Years 7-11, our College Executive Captain represent the College at the Berowra Lions Club Youth of the Year Program, and Year 10 Students, Amelia T, Olivia M, and Jemma P attend the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment. Student Leadership at the College is ongoing, and there are several events and opportunities offered to students throughout the year. Here is some insight into what has happened so far:

Launch of the Student Representative Council for Year 7-11:
Our Year 12 SRC Captains, Emi S and Trisha S, are patiently awaiting their team formation for 2025. The Student Representative Council is for students who are passionate about student voice and want to develop leadership skills in the College and represent the student body. Applications closed on 20 February, and a panel inclusive of the Student Leadership Coordinator, the Dean of Wellbeing, and the SRC mentor, will be examining each application to determine the SRC representatives for each year group. Updates to the SRC for 2025 will be provided in the next College newsletter.
Berowra Lions Club Youth of the Year Program:
Simran, the College Executive Captain representing Mount St Benedict College, participated in the 2025 Berowra Lions Club Youth of the Year program on Sunday 9 February with remarkable poise and passion. During the competition, she underwent a rigorous interview where she showcased her critical thinking and communication skills. She was also tasked with responding to two impromptu questions on current affairs, which she handled with confidence.
In her speech, Simran chose to address a deeply relevant topic: the theme of belonging in Australia and the importance of fostering inclusion and unity within Australian society. She posed a series of reflective questions for the audience to ponder. Simran’s thoughtful and insightful approach left a strong impression, reflecting her leadership abilities and commitment to making a positive difference in the community. She has proudly represented the Bennies community. Below is her insight into her experience:
The annual Lions Youth of the Year competition was a great experience to practice interview skills, impromptu questions and public speaking in a non-threatening environment. The day started with a 45-minute interview based off a previously submitted application, with a panel of adult judges. After that each participant had to answer two impromptu questions in front of judges and a public crowd as well as a pre prepared speech. The day was an exciting opportunity to build on my current strengths and connect with likeminded students from Year 11 and 12. Overall the day was lots of fun and I learnt communication and critical thinking skills that will prepare me for both school life and life beyond the Red Brick Wall.
As a College, we are grateful to the Berowra Lions Club of Australia for this opportunity which is offered to our students each year.
RYPEN - Rotary Youth Program of ENrichment:
RYPEN is the Rotary Youth Program of ENrichment. It is a wonderful program which works on developing crucial life skills in young people, recognising the importance of holistic growth. Not only does it allow students to enhance their critical thinking skills, it also helps them develop self-confidence, communication and leadership skills, working towards maintaining responsibility in their everyday encounters as lifelong learners. Each year, the program is offered to our students at Mount St Benedict College, and fortunately, we were able to send three students, Amelia T, Olivia M, and Jenna P. A recount of the experience is below:
On the 14 – 16 February, three of us embarked on RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of ENrichment). It was an amazing experience, full of many memories that we are sure to never forget.
On the first day, we had an opportunity to get to know the others at the camp, which was a slightly daunting experience. This included a game of bingo, sharing random facts about ourselves, and creating war cries together.
The next day, we woke at 6.30am to begin the many tasks that awaited us. First, we learned about how to be a leader, and the skills that it involves (such as teamwork, and using our voice). We also learned to use various strategies (such as meditation) to calm our nerves during a challenging situation. After this, we used our newly developed teamwork and leadership skills in team activities that included: being blindfolded in a maze, stacking crates, using a group-claw machine, travelling along planks of wood and jumping onto a tyre in a large group. As we began these challenges, we were incredibly slow, as everyone was far too shy to speak up. However, as we continued, we began to communicate much better and complete the tasks in half the time. It was astonishing to watch ourselves grow in such a short period of time!
Next, we played archery tag, which was certainly a highlight of the camp! It was a combination of archery and dodgeball, where we had to try and shoot the other team. We also had a medic, whom we had to protect as a team, which evoked further communication and teamwork among us. Afterwards, we had to build rafts, which was a very fun experience. We had to work together to create the vehicles, then some people had to swim with it in the creek, whilst others had to sit on top of it. After a well-needed night of sleep, we woke up bright and early the next day for our biggest challenge yet; an ink bomb had been placed on the property, and we had to complete various activities to discover clues that could aid us in finding and deactivating it. This task had us running all around the beautiful location whilst we completed the many challenges, such as making a star from a loop of rope and organising ourselves into height order without verbal communication. It greatly needed the leadership and communication skills we had been developing throughout the weekend, and we were fortunate enough to deactivate it!
RYPEN was an amazing experience that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to attend. It put me out of my comfort zone and extended me in ways I never could have imagined. A special thank you to a few who made it possible: Mrs Silva, everyone at Rotary and our sponsors; Beecroft Rotary Club. It was a wonderful experience, and one that I will cherish the memories of forever!
Amelia Tolfts, on behalf of Olivia and Jenna
The College is grateful for the opportunities provided to the students from external partners which help them flourish in areas of leadership.

Dignity Dishes
The Duke of Ed students are volunteering their service to the local community by engaging in the School's Dignity Dishes program.
Fifty students from Years 9 to 12 will be providing home cooked meals each week for people who are experiencing homelessness, or at risk of experiencing homelessness. All Duke of Edinburgh students were offered an opportunity to be able to contribute to this not-for-profit organisation.
These hours contribute to their Voluntary Service section for their Duke of Ed Award and we very much appreciate their efforts to this worthy cause. The students were involved in a presentation this week from Sherin, Dignity's National Partnerships Manager. The presentation was informative yet also confronting to hear stories of the homeless and of the need for assistance in the community. I believe our students will not only be practising their cooking skills, fulfilling their Duke of Edinburgh requirements but also get a lot out of giving back to the local community, especially to those who are most vulnerable.
