From the Principal
I’m sure you have all now heard that Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected Pope last week on Thursday 8 May, taking the name Leo XIV. We will keep the Pope in our prayers and pray for him.
Psalm 41
"May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and not hand him over to the power of his enemies”
A Prayer for the new Pope
Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to your shepherd a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he, as successor to the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world.
Amen.
This term is marching on, and we have already shared some important College events, last week we were please to host the annual Mother’s Day breakfast and Year 11 Drama play, “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. My thanks to all the mothers and grandmothers who were able to join us for the Mother’s Day breakfast last week. This week we held the annual College Cross-Country event, it’s always lovely to see the girls challenging themselves and having fun at this event. It’s not long now until the annual Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday 5 June, parents are very welcome to come along and enjoy the day if they are able.
This week we were grateful to thirty ex-students for visiting the College and attending Year 7 MYBennies classes. These students studied at the College from the early 1970s to as recently as 2023. This provided an opportunity for Year 7 students to plan and organise workshops for Bennies graduates, to find out more about the College's history and to put Benedictine Hospitality into practice. It was a delight to have these ex-students back with us.
At this week’s College Assembly, we were able to celebrate many of the students’ achievements in the cocurricular sphere. In my address, I challenged the students to think about what is in their cups. I posed the provocation to them, if someone bumps into you, whatever is inside the cup will spill out. When we're bumped, jostled, or shaken by life's challenges, what spills out of us? Is it patience or frustration? Kindness or anger? Forgiveness or resentment? Love or bitterness? We all face challenges, we will all have days when we feel stressed, disappointed, or overwhelmed. In those pressure-filled moments, whatever is truly inside your heart will reveal itself. At Bennies, we strive to help our students fill their cups with the values that reflect Jesus’ teaching, compassion, integrity, perseverance, and faith. But ultimately, each of us decide what fills your cup day by day, choice by choice. You may like to ask you daughter what she took away from this reflective challenge.
Staff Achievements
This week at the Staff Meeting, I was pleased to congratulate our staff on their achievements outside the College on work they have been doing on several diverse and topical issues demonstrating the excellence they display to your daughters in their work.

- Ms Viven Smeulders has recently completed her Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Education from Charles Sturt University.
- Earlier this month, Ms Nicola Murray will present at the Visual Arts and Design Educators Association (better known as VAEDA). Her presentation is entitled Explicit Teaching of Still Life Painting for Stage 5 Visual Art Students in alignment with the new 7-10 Visual Arts syllabus.
- In September 2024, Colleen Burke presented at the Australian Geography Teachers Association National Conference in the Northern Territory. Colleen’s workshop was entitled: Practical Representations – Topographic maps skills (Cross sections).
- In March 2025, Dr Miriam Gillett presented at the AISNSW History Conference. Her talk was entitled: Lifting the Veil: Integrating Women in Preliminary Ancient History.
- Gaby Fonteyne is about to embark on a research project with the University of Newcastle. The project is called Unveiling Pedagogical Opportunities for Hope and seeks to expand the Universal Growth Needs of Secondary Students Through a Circle of Courage Drama Pedagogical Framework.
We are blessed to have such amazing and committed educators at the College teaching our girls.
With my best wishes to all for the fortnight ahead.

Everyday Leadership: Courage, Accountability, and Growth
Everyday Leadership: Courage, Accountability, and Growth
With assessment season on the horizon, we are reminded that leadership doesn’t always wear a badge or stand on a stage. It shows up quietly when a student seeks help before they’re lost, shares ideas during a group task, or reflects deeply before submitting a draft. Our learning culture invites every student to step into leadership — not as something extra, but as part of the way we learn together.
We encourage families to ask:
• What’s something you did today that took a bit of courage?
• How did you take responsibility for your learning today?
• If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?
Leadership also means being accountable — for your time, your effort, and your mindset. These are the moments that shape not just results, but character. At each year level, students have access to Academic Handbooks which outline key course expectations, study guidelines, and assessment timelines. We also encourage students to engage with the Elevate Education resources provided, which offer practical, age-appropriate strategies for managing workload, study habits, and motivation — all essential tools for academic independence.
Elevate Education Parent Resources https://au.elevateeducation.com/parent-info
As part of our Wellbeing and Learning Model we recognise that coping and resilience are vital skills in today’s challenging world. Building mental toughness and resilience helps students manage stress, overcome setbacks, and thrive both academically and personally. We are committed to equipping our students with the tools to view challenges as opportunities for growth, fostering confidence and persistence. Encouraging a growth mindset supports students to see setbacks not as failures but as essential steps in their learning journey.
By fostering leadership, accountability, and resilience, we aim to prepare students to navigate challenges with confidence and a positive mindset.

From the Dean of Mission
When our last newsletter was published, Year 12 students were just returning from their Retreat—a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved. Centred around the final line of the Parable of the Good Samaritan, "Go and do likewise," the retreat encouraged students to reflect deeply on their personal journeys, relationships, and individual strengths. Through a variety of engaging activities and small group discussions, they explored what it means to live with compassion and purpose. The retreat also offered a valuable space to consider life beyond Mount St Benedict College and the kind of people they aspire to become. Thank you to all the staff who generously supported and guided our students throughout this enriching experience.

During lunchtime last week, we held a Mother’s Day card-making session where students created beautiful cards and bookmarks for their mums. The atmosphere was filled with care and creativity as students took great pride in crafting beautiful keepsakes. Students were also encouraged to write personal messages of thanksgiving, and much love went into every detail! It was wonderful to see photos of mums and daughters together, proudly holding the handmade cards.
This week, Year 10 students involved in the Prophetic Voices initiative had the valuable opportunity to connect with peers from the ten other Good Samaritan Education schools across Australia. Together, they explored how young people can be prophetic in today’s world by speaking out and taking action on issues that matter. Our students did an excellent job of presenting Bennies’ work supporting Caritas this year in raising awareness and funds. A highlight of the gathering was an insightful presentation on Access to Education for Rural, Remote, and Vulnerable Communities , with particular emphasis on supporting First Nations peoples. Students also learned about the impactful work of Marist 180, including their Daramu and Mudjin Byala programs. Informed by these discussions, our students will now work collaboratively to draft a statement to be presented at the upcoming Prophetic Voices Conference from 31 July to 2 August. This statement will contribute to a collective student response that will be shared at the Good Samaritan Education Triennial Conference later this year.
On Wednesday, the Year 12 Justice in Action class continued their exploration of social justice issues with a powerful and informative presentation from Ruth Lesmana, Client Services Manager at the House of Welcome. Ruth generously shared her time and deep insight into the complex challenges faced by asylum seekers in Australia. She explained the essential support services provided by House of Welcome and emphasised the importance of compassionate community responses. Ruth also inspired students to consider the role of advocacy, encouraging them to use their voices to influence policy and bring about meaningful change. It was an eye-opening session that deepened students’ understanding of justice, human dignity, and the power of collective action. Time is one of the most valuable gifts, and we appreciate Ruth for making the time in her busy schedule to speak with us.
On Wednesday evening, Mrs Wells, Deputy Dean of Mission and I had the privilege of accompanying four Mission Captains to the Brigidine Social Justice Forum. It was an inspiring event that brought together students from a number of schools to engage deeply with important social justice issues. Our students represented Mount St Benedict College with maturity and respect, thoughtfully engaging with each presentation. A highlight of the evening was hearing from Suzanne Hopman, the founder of Dignity , an organisation dedicated to supporting people experiencing homelessness. As our Duke of Edinburgh students regularly prepare meals for Dignity Dishes , it was a special moment to meet Suzanne and learn more about the incredible impact of her work. Her passion and commitment were inspiring and a powerful reminder of how we can all make a real difference.
During Term One, the College raised over $13,000 for our Community Partner – Caritas. This was a combination of fundraising from the Caritas Trek, Shrove Tuesday, Coin Trails and the Staff Talent Quest. It is a reflection of the Bennies commitment to Pax and Hospitality and walking hand in hand with those in need, reflecting solidarity with the marginalised and vulnerable.
It has certainly been a busy and inspiring few weeks at the College. It is wonderful to see our students embracing every opportunity to learn, serve, and thrive.

From the Dean of Wellbeing
Having recently attended the International Coalition of Girls Schools Symposium at Queenwood School, it is wonderful to see how strong the Bennies Wellbeing Program is in addressing the needs of our girls. However, there is always room for growth and this week, staff and students have been surveyed to help us identify key areas of need for each year group in a way that will help us offer support and guidance in a way that meets localised need. The surveys, year group specific geared for the specific needs of each year level, have asked staff and students to identify areas they would like to delve into in more depth as a way of extending our future programs, professional development of staff and resourcing. Parents are also welcome to contact Mrs Emily Visnjic, PA to the Dean of Wellbeing, evisnjic@msb.nsw.edu.au if there are any areas from the following, or any alternate options, they feel the College could explore as part of our College improvement programs.

Year 7 MYBennies Alumni Visits
Year 7 MYBennies Alumni Visits
This week, the Year 7 MYBennies classes were visited by former students of the College. Year 7 classes worked together to prepare for these visits, writing speeches and making presentations. Some classes even made cakes and gifts for the alumni. We informed our guests about changes to the College over recent years, including the new houses, new buildings, and so much more.

In our classes, the guests shared stories about their experiences at Bennies. One of our guests was from the first class to graduate in Bennies back in 1971. She shared lots of interesting stories about how Bennies was in the past. She recalled that there were only about 65 students who used classrooms in the basement of the MSB Centre. At that time, the nuns lived in the MSB Centre, also known as the novitiate, under the guidance of Sister Christopher Burrows. Often, the nuns would even teach the students: how cool! She also shared a memory about seeing one of the nuns outside riding a skateboard! Some more interesting things that the women from the Class of 1971 shared was how there were only Four houses, Subiaco, Monte Cassino, Maredsous and Terracina.
All of the visitors shared very interesting stories about their time here at Bennies and some of them even brought old ‘artefacts’! One of our guests brought old photos from her immersion to Timor Leste, she brought in her old art diary and her Year 12 jersey! We all loved listening and talking to them about their time here, especially the graduates from 1971. All of us were so intrigued about their stories and what has changed about the College. Everything they had to say kept us hooked and it was one of the best lessons this year.
Everything that everyone did to help prepare was incredible, from the baked goods to all the decorations, we really appreciate it!
We would especially like to thank Mrs Michelle Blackman in the College Marketing Team for her superior work in organising these visits from the alumni.

HSIE - Clean4Shores
HSIE - Clean4Shores
On Monday 5 May, a group of Year 10 students participated in the volunteer efforts of the Clean4Shore Program. This is the second year the College has, with the support from Hornsby Shire Council, participated in this stewardship activity. The morning started with an information session run by Hornsby Shire Council, where students learnt about how pollution collected through our water catchments and storm water drains contribute to marine debris and the strategies currently being used to reduce this. The field trip involved the cleanup of waste as we travelled on a barge to several beaches only accessible via boat. We filled 16 bulk bags and collected 300kg of rubbish. The most common form of waste was plastic film remnants and plastic drink bottles. It was rewarding work, and we thank the students who volunteered to be part of the cleanup team!

The day started off wet and rainy, making for a tough and muddy beginning, but the weather cleared up and finished with sunshine. Despite the challenging conditions, both teams played with great determination and spirit.
Our junior team consisted of many first time AFL players. They demonstrated amazing skill and perseverance and finished the round games with two wins and two losses. Thanks to other results going our way and losing both games narrowly, the team finished second on points difference to qualify for the final against Monte.
