From the Principal
It was an important day in the history of the College, as we celebrated House Spirit Day, an opportunity to strengthen the bonds in our existing eight Houses and to build the culture and spirit of our two newest Houses, Jamberoo and Scholastica.
The House structure at the College creates a strong sense of belonging. Homerooms become like families. Students build strong relationships and connections over their six years together. Quality relationships bring joy and support, reduce stress and boost confidence.
Expanding our House structure with the addition of two new Houses will help us meet the Wellbeing and Learning needs of our students and staff and the activities on House Spirit Day aligned with the domains of our Wellbeing and Learning Model. Learning to juggle fostered a growth mindset; Host Homeroom gatherings were an opportunity to demonstrate the College value of Hospitality, and icebreakers and games built friendships and started conversations. The day culminated in a Colour Run, an event full of joy and energy – a true celebration of our Bennies community.
It has been exam season across the school over the last fortnight. Year 11 Preliminaries are have concluded for 2024, and Year 10 examinations continued into this week. Meanwhile, quietly tucked away on the upper floors of the MSB Centre, our Year 12 students continued with their HSC exams into their fourth week, with many celebrating as their final examinations came to an end. 2Unit Physics brought the HSC to a close for the Class of 2024 today. Congratulations to all our senior students undertaking examinations and to our junior students undertaking their final assessment tasks for their good spirit and commitment to giving their best to demonstrating their best!
For teaching and support staff, the marking and reporting season now begins. I also thank them for the dedication and care they give to the feedback they provide to the students and their families as we move towards the end of the academic year.
On that note, when one year closes, another begins. Last week, we held our annual Single School Orientation Day, when the Year 6 students, who may be the only ones from their primary school, arrive for a special Orientation Day whose focus is on making new friends, connecting with staff, understanding high school life and of course, having fun. In 2025, students will be join the Bennies community from an incredible 88 primary schools ranging from the Hills LGA to the lower and middle North Shore. We look forward to welcoming the entire Year 7 2025 cohort back next Friday for their formal Orientation Day, beginning with the Parent Information Evening on Tuesday night.
Next Monday night, the Parents and Friends Association will be holding their AGM, where office bearers will be elected for the 2025 calendar year. As is usual, a member of staff will present on an aspect of College life that would be of particular interest to parents. In previous years, we have had a range of topics, including helping at home with Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence in the classroom. This year, Mrs He will be speaking about our comprehensive Cocurricular Program, including “What Next?” for cocurricular now that our new program has been running for four years, foreshadowing overseas immersions and learning tours and outlining how our Cocurricular Model is such an adjunct to learning for the girls.
It was wonderful to hear the excellent acoustics at work in the Chapel last week with Year 7 singing during a celebration of the eucharist. Fr Jim McKeon from Epping/Carlingford Parish celebrated with Year 7 and their teachers. Over the summer holiday period the Chapel is being completely repainted in readiness for more comprehensive use in 2025. In other refurbishments, parents visiting on-site will have noticed the wear and tear on the College Oval this year, so over the summer break the oval will be completely returfed. Work for that begins next week. It has been many years since a refresh of the Oval and we look forward to some “gentle summer rain” over the break to help it establish for the girls to use in Term One.

Mission News
There have been some wonderful opportunities for us to come together in community over the last two weeks!
Last week, Father Jim McKeon presided over a special Mass for Year 7 in our beautiful Chapel, marking the first time since COVID that we’ve gathered students there for Mass. The Chapel’s incredible acoustics made it even more memorable as the girls’ voices filled the space in response to Father Jim’s prayers. Following the Mass, Year 7 students shared morning tea in the College’s beautiful Chapel gardens. It was a special occasion, and we look forward to offering this same opportunity to other year groups in the coming year, further strengthening our sense of community and connection to the Church.
Prophetic Voices is a student forum where Year 10 students across the GSE Schools come together to examine, listen and discern. This week launched the start of Prophetic Voices for the 2024 year group with students meeting to identify the issues they would like to explore more deeply. Over 2025, they will meet three times via Zoom to listen to guest presenters on these issues. The program culminates in a three-day conference, with participants presenting their final position statements at the Good Samaritan Triennial Conference. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet with like-minded students.
This week we marked a significant milestone as the new Jamberoo and Scholastica Homerooms met for the first time. Named after St Scholastica and the Benedictine Abbey on the South Coast of New South Wales, these new Houses will further strengthen our ability to provide meaningful pastoral care and a strong sense of belonging. Jamberoo House will embrace the values of Humility and Listening, while Scholastica House will focus on Conversatio and Awareness of God. With these additions, we are excited to see the growing spirit and culture of all our Houses flourish. This Friday, Mount St Benedict College will celebrate House Spirit Day. The day’s activities are designed to foster connection, engagement, and a deeper sense of purpose, drawing from the Wellbeing and Learning model – Learn, Thrive and Serve.
The College also launched our Christmas Hamper Appeal for our Community Partner, House of Welcome. Each homeroom has now been assigned a family to prepare a Christmas Hamper. Each year we ask staff and students to deliver these Hampers on a Saturday just before the end of the school year. It is a wonderful experience and I encourage you to sign up when the volunteer form is released next week.

Progressive Assessment Testing Reading/Numeracy
Progressive Assessment Testing Reading/Numeracy
As part of our commitment to your daughter’s education, the College will implement Progressive Achievement Testing in Numeracy (PAT-N) and Reading (PAT-R). Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) developed the tests to provide and validate student achievement and understanding as they progress through their educational journey.
Why are we using PAT-R and PAT-N?
The tests will provide point-in-time data to:
- Highlight individual strengths and areas of weakness.
- Provide longitudinal data of the College’s strength and area of growth.
- Inform teaching practice.
- Increase the level of differentiation within the classroom.
- Improve the specificity of learning goals.
- Measure growth from one year to the next.
Administration of PAT-R and PAT-N
The test will take approximately 1 hour and consist of 40 questions. The students will need their laptop, a pen, and a blank piece of paper for any working out.

Year 11 Dance, Drama and Music Excursion
Year 11 Dance, Drama and Music Excursion
Carrying on the theme of Henry VIII's and his six wives from the Year 11 play Queens in Term Two, the Dance, Drama and Music staff provided an opportunity for Year 11 students to attend the musical, SIX at the Theatre Royal on the weekend. This is a globally celebrated musical and has won 35 major international awards, including two prestigious Tony Awards and a Grammy nomination. In this high-octane 80-minute musical experience, the feisty Tudor queens boldly rewrite five hundred years of history. With a global audience of 3.5 million people per year and a staggering 600 million soundtrack streams, SIX the Musical has become a cultural sensation, amassing an incredible 3 billion TikTok views worldwide.
Here is a students perspective on the experience:
The Drama, Music, and Dance excursion to SIX was fun, entertaining, and quite thought-provoking. The high-energy performances with clever lyrics and a unique take on storytelling brought the history of Henry VIII’s wives to life. As a Drama student, each queen’s performance on stage reminded me of the importance of confidence and commitment in our own drama work and having strong character choices that are easily identifiable. Overall, it was a memorable experience that excited us all to keep working on our performance skills! Alannah Year 11 Drama
