From the Principal
Over the last fortnight, the College has hosted a number of events that have focused on our newest students and families joining us in 2025. As a community, we commit to the Benedictine spirit of hospitality and make, as our College song puts it, “a welcome space” for our new students. From the “Next Steps” evening last Tuesday night to the full Orientation Day on Friday, our 260 newest Bennies Girls were welcomed in style. In addition, our current parents have also reached out through our Parents and Friends Association to welcome the new parents at the Christmas Gingerbread House activity which was held last Saturday. All of these events after school and at weekends reflect a welcoming and hospitable approach to relationships and a generosity of spirit that so characterises our school.
I think of generosity as a near relative of hospitality. Generosity is not an investment in hopes of a return. Rather, generous people give of time, talent or treasure with little thought of personal gain. Instead, they give in the hope that they might make some little difference in the lives of others. So, if virtue is its own reward, then perhaps generosity is as well.
In his Rule, Saint Benedict commands his monks to receive all guests as Christ. The individual status of guests matters little, but it’s not as if the monks get nothing in return. As often as not, they get a glimpse of Christ in each of their guests, as we do when we meet our new families, and the joy of those encounters is reward enough.
In the same way, during Mission Week last week, each of our House Partners and their good works were a focus during the lunch break. Activities were held each day, from a Zoom call to the Santa Teresa Mission (which students and staff visited during the last term break), to our Houses fundraising for the works of the Good Samaritan Foundation. Each activity supporting those ‘beyond the red brick wall’ who reach out as the face of God to those in need.
Generosity of time, talent and treasure is a gift indeed and something we are ever mindful of as we move into Advent and the Christmas season.

Mission News
Last week, we celebrated Mission Week, which focuses on raising awareness and funds for our House Partners through the Good Samaritan Foundation.
Mr Hume, Heads of House and House Captains did a fabulous job coordinating activities every lunchtime.
We had Subiaco and Arcadia selling recycled clothes in support not only of The Good Samaritan Inn but also as a Stewardship initiative. Montserrat and Stanbrook provided information on the Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) Community whilst decorating crosses inspired by the artists' work at the Spirituality Centre. Our new houses, Jamberoo and Scholastica, whilst only newly established, ran a hugely successful Spider/Ice-cream Drink Sale. Every cup had information about Timor Leste glued to it, and close to $700 was raised. New Norcia and Maredsous invited students to write prayers for the Kinder School in Bacolad, The Philippines, creating a beautiful display. Finally, the week ended with an amazing installation by Monte Cassino and Terracina on the effects of climate change in Kiribati. It was wonderful to see all of the Student Leaders' planning and work come to fruition.
Our creation of hampers for House of Welcome is well underway. The House of Welcome provides vital services to refugees and asylum seekers, offering them much-needed assistance and a sense of community. Each year Homerooms are allocated a family to provide a Christmas Hamper for. This year, with our new Homerooms, we will be creating 70 hampers. I encourage our Bennies families to pop something into your trolley this weekend to donate to your daughter's Homeroom hamper and to sign up to assist with the delivery. Delivery will take place on the Saturday 30 November in the morning.
Sign up to deliver a hamper here: https://benniesnet.msb.nsw.edu.au/d2l/le/news/10140/9665/view
Delivering hampers is a great way to give back, a practical demonstration of our value of Hospitality, and a wonderful experience. Please feel free to make this a family affair.
We are delighted to have our friends from St Edmund's College, Wahroonga, visiting us next Friday. The Year 11 Eddies students will join our Year 9 Ministry class to share in a special Christmas craft session. This is an opportunity to create some festive decorations, reflect on the meaning of Christmas and enjoy each other’s company. As well as a morning crafting together, both classes will share lunch. I’m sure it will be a great deal of fun for both schools.
There is still much to be involved in and celebrate as we move into the last two weeks of school. I encourage you to watch the College Socials to share in the joy.

Progressive Assessment Testing Reading/Numeracy
Progressive Assessment Testing Reading/Numeracy
As part of our commitment to your daughter’s education, the College will implement Progressive Achievement Testing in Numeracy (PAT-N) and Reading (PAT-R). Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) developed the tests to provide and validate student achievement and understanding as they progress through their educational journey.
Why are we using PAT-R and PAT-N?
The tests will provide point-in-time data to:
- Highlight individual strengths and areas of weakness.
- Provide longitudinal data of the College’s strength and area of growth.
- Inform teaching practice.
- Increase the level of differentiation within the classroom.
- Improve the specificity of learning goals.
- Measure growth from one year to the next.
Administration of PAT-R and PAT-N
The test will take approximately 1 hour and consist of 40 questions. The students will need their laptop, a pen, and a blank piece of paper for any working out.
