          From the Principal

As we enter the beautiful season of Advent, our College has been alive with activity, celebration and community spirit. Advent calls us to hope, expectation and preparation — and this has certainly been reflected in the life of the College over these past few weeks.

Last week we welcomed more than 200 parents to our annual P&F Christmas Gingerbread House Decorating event. It was a laughter-filled and very messy afternoon but also a wonderful reminder of the support and warmth of our parent community as they welcomed many of the new Year 7 2026 families.

Our Cocurricular Sports Awards also took centre stage, with Class of 2014 alumna and Sydney FC star Nat Tobin returning as our guest speaker. Her message of perseverance and passion resonated deeply with our students, and it was inspiring to see so many young athletes recognised for their effort and excellence. Congratulations to Evana Butler who was presented this week with a NSW Sports Blue in AFL (and was also selected in the All Australian Team).

We continued our celebrations with the Cocurricular Awards Ceremony, where we acknowledged the extraordinary breadth of participation and achievement across the College. Whether in the arts, service, leadership, academic enrichment, or other pursuits, our students once again showed the richness of their gifts.

Stage Five students showcased their talents across two impressive Creative Arts Showcase evenings, each filled with creativity and collaboration. Meanwhile, our future Year 7 cohort enjoyed their Orientation Day — a full and vibrant day of discovery and excitement despite the wet weather.

Last Saturday, staff, students and parents came together to deliver Christmas hampers to clients of our community partner the House of Welcome. Thank you to all who contributed to this important act of generosity and solidarity.

Finally, we celebrated the achievements of many of our students at our annual College Presentation Day. Congratulations to every student acknowledged for their commitment, effort and growth throughout the year.

As the school year draws to a close, I wish every family a safe, happy and holy Christmas. May the blessings, peace and joy of the Christmas season be yours in abundance.

It is hard believe that our 2025, a Year of Hope and Hospitality, has come to an end. At the heart of our faith is the hospitality of God. God who created humanity out of a desire for relationship and love. In Christ we see the embodiment of hospitality and hope. We have had a busy end of the year in Mission at the College and we have much to be thankful for.

Last week, thirty Year 11 students from the Justice In Action class visited the residents of McQuoin Park Residential Care Home in Wahroonga to deliver some Christmas cheer. Along with some Year 7 students, they created 122 individual gifts with personalised cards for the residents. We had a lovely time singing carols with the residents finishing up with the College Song, complete with clapping and stomping. The visit was a rewarding experience for the residents and our community. Both the College and Catholic Healthcare are excited about strengthening this new intergenerational partnership, with greater connection planned for 2026. Imogen and Rianna both share their reflections on the visit below.

Each year the College works with House of Welcome to provide Christmas Hampers for their clients. Last weekend our community travelled across Sydney to deliver hundreds of bags of groceries, decorations and gifts to bring Christmas joy to others. We feel blessed to be able to support House of Welcome in this way, who do such important work in supporting Refugees and Asylum Seekers. We are grateful to Woolworths who have once again supported our work by donating 500 bags for our hampers. This makes a significant difference to our preparation of hampers. This year, thanks to a connection with one of our parents, we also had a large donation of toys to include from one of the local golf courses. We are enormously grateful. The Ministry class had a wonderful time carefully allocating the presents to families. They made a fabulous addition to our hampers! My husband and I were lucky to deliver bags to a family in Bankstown to witness the delight of the three year old little girl on spotting a baby doll in one of the bags and the obvious delight of her mother on witnessing that and the eight bags of groceries we had with us. Many thanks to everyone for your support of the hampers and to our incredible deliverers.

We were fortunate to have our friends from St Edmund's College (Eddies) visit us again this year for some Christmas Craft! Our Year 9 Ministry class and the Year 9 Eddies class spent an hour making cards and decorations before sharing lunch together in the beautiful weather. Mrs He’s Year 9 PDHPE class hosted some games during the lunch break. The Eddies students proved to be tough competition in soccer! Some of our best soccer students are in this class and it quickly became obvious they were going to have to ‘bring their A game.’ It was a fabulous way to end the year! We have really enjoyed connecting with Eddies this year and Mrs Wells is working on more exciting things in partnering with them next year.

As a Catholic College, celebrating the Eucharist is key to who we are. The church teach us that the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our Christian life (SC #10). We are grateful to Fr Raphael for celebrating Mass with on Wednesday and for his time throughout the year. It was a beautiful celebration which started with the setting of the Nativity. I’d like to thank Mrs Ryan, Mrs Marcelo-Jones Ms Ursino, Mrs Landers, Ms Meredith, The Tech Crew and the Choir for all their work throughout the year to create such meaningful Liturgies.

In a Catholic School, Mission is the work of everyone. We work on building the Kingdom of God through our prayer, our relationships and our service to others. As we enter Advent and approach Christmas, it is timely to thank the entire community for all you have contributed to the Mission of College, our response to God’s call. This year has indeed been one were we have embraced hope and hospitality in our own lives and through our actions offered it to others.

I wish you all the blessings of Advent and Christmas.

          Student Reflections

          Rianna

Our visit to the Catholic Healthcare residential aged care at McQuoin Park was a meaningful opportunity for us to reflect on the true gift of giving. We spent time singing Christmas carols and sharing the joy and spirit of the season, creating moments of warmth and connection for the residents. It was a significant experience, allowing us to connect with the wider community and, as students who have been immersed in study all year, to give back in the simplest yet most powerful way, by bringing a smile to someone’s face during such a holy season.

          Imogen

As part of our Justice in Action unit, we wanted to put compassion into practice especially during this Christmas period. Visiting the retirement home gave us a chance to connect with people in our community who may feel isolated or don’t get many visitors over the holidays. It felt important to show up, share our time, and bring a bit of joy in the lead up to Christmas.

For the residents, having young people visit breaks up their week and brings fresh energy into the home. It was really special seeing their faces light up and hearing them sing along with us, because music has a way of connecting people no matter their age. For us, it’s a chance to step outside our usual world, it helps us build empathy, patience, and a deeper sense of responsibility to others in our community.

The preparation gave us time to think about what would be meaningful for the residents, whether that was designing cards, decorating mugs, or making small handmade gifts. The visit itself was really rewarding. Singing carols and watching the residents smile made everything feel worthwhile. It was a genuinely uplifting experience because you could see how much it meant to them.

The visit reminded me how small acts of kindness can have a huge impact. Even something as simple as a song or a handmade gift can make someone feel remembered and valued. I hope we can continue building this connection in the future, because it benefits everyone involved.

Seeking the Glimmers: Finding Light in Everyday Moments

Seeking the Glimmers: Finding Light in Everyday Moments

In the busyness of daily life—school drop-offs, assessments, work meetings, and the ever-growing to-do lists, it’s easy to become consumed by what’s going wrong or what still needs to be done. But what if we paused, just for a moment, to notice what’s going right?

These moments of light are what researcher Deb Dana calls “glimmers”—small, everyday cues of safety, connection, and joy that spark a sense of wellbeing. Unlike “triggers,” which activate stress or anxiety, glimmers help regulate our nervous system and remind us that we are safe, seen, and supported.

At Mount St Benedict College, our Benedictine values of Peace, Hospitality, Stewardship, and Community invite us to be present, to notice the sacred in the ordinary, and to nurture relationships. Seeking glimmers is a deeply Benedictine practice—it’s about slowing down, being attentive, and finding gratitude in the now.

          The Science Behind the Spark

Research in positive psychology and neuroscience supports the power of noticing glimmers. According to Dr Barbara Fredrickson’s Broaden-and-Build Theory, positive emotions, like awe, gratitude, and joy, broaden our awareness and help us build lasting personal resources, from resilience to stronger relationships.

When families intentionally seek out and share glimmers - like a shared laugh at the dinner table, a kind word from a teacher, or a moment of quiet reflection - they’re not just creating memories. They’re building emotional strength, deepening bonds, and modelling for young people how to find hope and meaning in everyday life.

          Glimmers in Our College Community

At MSB, we see glimmers in the way students support one another, in the quiet moments of prayer and reflection, and in the joy of learning something new. Our wellbeing programs are designed to help students recognise these moments and develop the emotional literacy to name and nurture them.

We encourage families to continue this practice at home. Ask your child:

          • What was a glimmer in your day today?
          • When did you feel most connected or calm?
          • What made you smile unexpectedly?

These small conversations can have a big impact.

          Glimmers and Future Success

In a world that often equates success with achievement, we believe true success is grounded in wellbeing. When students learn to notice glimmers, they develop a mindset of optimism, gratitude, and resilience, qualities that are essential not just for academic success, but for a flourishing life.

As we look to the future, let us be a community that seeks the light, even in the smallest of moments. Let us teach our young people that success is not just about reaching the top, but about noticing the beauty along the way.

So over the Christmas break, may you find your glimmers, in a shared meal, a walk in nature, a kind word, or a quiet breath. And may they remind you that even in the ordinary, there is extraordinary grace.

Thank you once again to every student who trialled, trained, and competed for MSB in our Representative Sport programs this year. I would also like to extend my thanks to all the parents who drove their child to early morning trainings and supported them at events throughout the year.

          Interschool Sport:

          Term Four Sport Wrap-up

Term Four marked another outstanding chapter for our sporting program, with Rugby 7s and Volleyball teams continuing to build on the momentum created earlier in the year.

          Chloe Dalton Rugby 7s
Our Junior and Intermediate Barker Rugby 7s teams delivered an exceptional campaign, both proudly finishing as runners-up in their divisions. Throughout the season, players demonstrated impressive physicality, teamwork, and resilience, consistently representing the College with determination and school spirit. Their performances highlighted not only their growth as athletes, but also the strong culture within our Rugby 7s program.

          Interschool Volleyball
Volleyball also enjoyed a successful Term Four, with 10 teams taking to the court across various year groups and divisions. The depth of talent on display was clear, with three of those teams claiming runner-up positions in their competitions. This capped off a fantastic year for Volleyball—a year marked by incredible participation numbers, strong skill development, and a sense of enthusiasm that continues to elevate the program.

Congratulations to all students and coaches involved for their commitment, effort, and sportsmanship. Term Four has been a fitting end to an exceptional year of sport at the College, and we look forward to building on this success in the year ahead.

          CGSSSA Touch Football Championships:

Last week, twelve students represented the College at the CGSSSA Touch Football Championships held at Macquarie University. Competing in the Open division, our team was made up of a lot of our under 15s players. After five round games, we finished second on the ladder and qualified for the semi-finals, with our only loss being a close 2–3 match against Monte. In the semi-final, we faced a strong Stella Maris outfit and were defeated 4–2. Congratulations to the following students on a fantastic performance: Amelia B, Annabel C, Annika F, Cate G, Claudia M, Elise W, Isabelle M, Mackenzie M, Mia S, Millie K, Zoe M and Zoe L.

          NSW All Schools Cricket Championships:

Last week, Eve B (Year 8) represented NSWCCC in the Under 15s Cricket team at the NSW All Schools Championships. On the first day, her team played two T20 matches against the Barbarians and NSWCHS, performing well despite narrow losses in both games. On day two, NSWCCC faced CIS in a 50-over match and elected to bat first, posting a total of 177 runs. However, when it was time to field, play was delayed due to lightning, and the match was eventually abandoned as the storm made it unsafe to continue. On the final day, NSWCCC played another 50-over match for third place against the Barbarians. It was another tough contest, with NSWCCC finishing in fourth place overall. Congratulations Eve on a fantastic achievement.
